Designer Q&A:

Q) What was your brief from the client?

The client requested an open-plan kitchen with an island that could serve multiple functions. They wanted a range cooker, a large sink, a feature hood, a fridge integrated within the island and ample seating for casual dining and socialising.

Q) How did you answer that brief?

The design involves a large central island with seating and integrated storage under the island, including the fridge. The range cooker and feature hood take centre stage on the back wall, creating a focal point. The open-plan layout connects the kitchen with the dining area, maintaining an easy flow whilst taking full advantage of the use of space.

Q) Which products did you use and why?

We selected a range cooker for its professional performance and timeless appeal. The island features a durable quartz worksurface, while the cabinetry in a calming Inchyra Blue and Ammonite by Farrow and Ball adds warmth and character. The pot filler tap is a lovely aesthetic as well, eliminating the need to carry pots from the sink to the cooker. This is especially useful when you need boiling water for pasta, stocks and soups.

Q) Was there any building/renovation work involved?

Yes, the kitchen space was part of a larger renovation to open up the ground floor. This involved removing a dividing wall to create the open-plan layout and reconfiguring the space for a better flow between the kitchen and dining areas.

Q) What design elements do you think make the scheme so successful?

There is a lovely mix of traditional and contemporary elements. The classic range cooker for instance is paired with modern-style cabinetry to create a balanced look. The island serves as a multifunctional hub, perfect for cooking, dining and socialising, while the natural light enhances the open and airy feel of the space.

Q) Any advice for someone who may be planning a new kitchen?

Always focus on functionality first — ensure your kitchen layout works for your daily needs. Invest in quality materials, as they will serve you well in the long run, and don’t be afraid to mix styles, as a personal touch adds character to your space.

Q) Any trend predictions for 2025?

More bold colour choices for cabinetry mixed with natural materials such as wood and stone. Smart technology with integrated appliances and lighting systems will continue to rise in popularity, offering both convenience and sustainability.
