The designer: Keith Turner at The Wood Works

The story: A family-run company, The Wood Works specialises in bespoke, custom-made designs for contemporary, modern and traditional interiors. 

Designer Q&A:

Q) What was your brief from the client?

The client came to us with the initial requirement of a vibrant blue combined with gold/brass highlights, taking inspiration from an elegant piece of freestanding furniture.

Most of the walls, windows and doors were pre-determined, so with these finishes and the appliance requirements we set about finding the best use of the space.

Q) How did you answer the brief?

We took the initial finishes and built on them further with a warm veined Calacatta quartz surface and a soft wood grain interior for the cabinetry. The architectural features proposed for the property pulled the design into a contemporary styled kitchen with modern feature details. We then tailored the kitchen to the space and architectural features, such as the chic floor to ceiling window and skylight to maximise the light potential.

Q) Which products did you use and why?

We decided to go with the Gaggenau 200 series ovens in metallic grey, as these added practical side opening door functionality as well as sophisticated detailing to stand out. We also included a Siemens iQ700 series induction hob with intuitive fullTouch TFT display, versatility of the flexinduction operation and refined styling. The gold Quooker tap and sink finish also complemented the brass details within the furniture nicely to bring more consideration and consistency.

Q) Tell us about the Westin cooker hood

The hood is a Westin Prime integrated extractor incorporated into a Wood Works bespoke brass panel mantel.We chose Westin because, like us, they are a British company with great values that pride themselves on a quality product and equally good service. In a word, aligned.

Q) Which design elements make the scheme so successful?

The boundaries between the sectioned off areas transition well, with the waterfall edge worktops and double thickness end panels. Where the furniture is equally spaced either side of the floor to ceiling window, also finished exquisitely with the stone, it gave a luxurious balanced view from the living area, which was so important.

One of the main contributing factors to the success of the project was the client’s approach. Their friendly, warm manner in going through the design was a real pleasure. When the clients are so nice, it makes the journey really enjoyable and draws out more in the creative process.

Q) Any advice for someone who may be planning a new kitchen?

Be bold, don’t hold back and enjoy the journey.
