The latest project from Charlie Smallbone’s Ledbury Studio
A Ledbury Studio Metallics Collection kitchen is created in complete accord with the needs of its owner. In this case, it was the homeowner’s love of pewterware that influenced Charlie Smallbone’s latest design. Inspired by the material, Charlie developed a new way of using pewter on kitchen cabinetry. He took sheet metal, hand textured it with hammers and heat, and applied a patina using acids to age it, finally sealing the surface with lacquer. This kitchen is the triumphant first home for the pewter, which is now a signature finish for Ledbury Studio.
To complement the pewter doors, Charlie layered in a harmonious combination of dark-stained ash and paint (seen on the island) to offer a masterclass in mixing materials. Crowning it all is Bianco Macaubas Quartzite, a hardwearing but stunning choice for the worktops and splashback owing to its rich marble-esque veining. The homeowner’s prized pewterware was then placed at the heart of the design, given pride of place in specially created open shelving in the island and on a display area above the induction hob.
“It’s taken over a year to pull this project together but it is well worth the wait,” says Charlie. “I was thrilled to have the opportunity to develop this pewter finish, which works wonderfully in this light and airy environment. The finished kitchen is a stunning showcase for the Metallics Collection and I’m delighted with the final result.” www.ledburystudio.com
