Woodstock Furniture was established in 1978, opening its first showroom in Packenham Street, North London. From the start, quality and longevity was at the heart of the company and they have remained a force in the kitchen and furniture industry for the past forty years. Woodstock now produce furniture for every room of the home; its small but staunch and creative team have retained strong relationships with their clients, providing a personal and friendly service. Due to these close relationships, they have found that 85% of business is either repeat or recommendation. In 2004, MD and Designer Andrew Hall purchased the current workshop in Andover, Hampshire. There they built the main showroom; its proximity to the workshop allows clients to see their furniture being made. Andrew Hall describes the process of creating this spectacular curved kitchen …

Q: What were the stand-out priorities in your brief from the client?

The design and overall layout of this kitchen had to be strongly influenced by the spectacular rain drop shaped skylight that floods this open plan space with light. This, of course, was a concept we were more than happy to work with … Storage was also a priority, our client wanted everything concealed, which allowed us to suggest beautiful oak cabinetry, knowing that all the natural markings could be displayed to perfection.

Q: How did you set about answering that brief, what were your first thoughts when you saw this wonderful space?

The roof light in this space was gorgeous and so we certainly wanted to do the rest of the space justice with our work. The shapely skylight is reflected in the large sweeping island of this kitchen. It was a joy to work with such a generous space, knowing that we could present ideas that were both creative and practical, as well as providing a huge amount of storage space as requested by our client.

Q: Explain the reasons behind the choices of cabinetry and work surfaces, regarding colour, style and texture …

The material used to create this impressively proportioned kitchen is oak which has been stained to create a smoked oak affect that draws out the grain in the wood wonderfully. The clients also wanted a 50’s style high level banquette style dining area to the side of the kitchen. We were able to carefully match this area to the high-level units to the right that house the fridges, freezers, wine coolers, larder and ovens. The raised levels, along with the skylight, add interest and flexibility to the space, if everything had been at one height and one level it wouldn’t have been so spectacular!

Q: What design elements do you think make the scheme so successful?

The design of this kitchen was influenced by the skylight with the curve of its opening being echoed in the large sweeping island. It is this design element that gives this space its unique overall synergy.

Q: What is your best advice for someone who may be planning a new kitchen?

Attention to detail is crucial, whether it be considering electrical and plumbing elements or the finish on your cabinetry. I would also advise not to get caught up with trends; classic designs with a timeless appeal are things to strive for. It’s equally important that the materials you opt for will stand the test of time. While all budgets differ, quality materials will bring real value and longevity to your kitchen. Lastly, think carefully about the ways in which you and your family use and live in the kitchen. Think about the layout around these ideas. Don’t skimp on seating, everyone always gathers around an island, banquette or dining table after school or work … try and allocate space for tech and gadgets too, with plenty of sockets and charging points for everyone’s screens and phones!
