I couldn’t quite believe my eyes when I first caught sight of this pink kitchen – it’s bright, fun and cheerful, without losing its elegance and sophistication. Designer Nicola Bellot worked her magic on this Pedini kitchen from Lida Cucina.

Q: What were the stand-out priorities in your brief from the client?
Our client had seen a walnut veneer kitchen elsewhere and wanted to achieve a similar finish to these units. We also had to incorporate an existing range style cooker which had already been purchased by the client. So … my challenge was to design a contemporary kitchen which fused the traditional element of the cooker and wooden finish with modern accents and hi-tech appliances. It was exciting to be able to create a kitchen in a large open space which is flooded by light – there is a five-metre run of bi-fold doors which look out to a picturesque sea view.

Q: How did you set about answering that brief, what were your first thoughts?
In order to achieve this I had to source a wood veneer to the client’s exacting specification. The best solution was to design a new bespoke door finish which was produced by our factory, which we then stained to the exactly the right colour for our client. In the end the perfect sample was produced and later happily approved by the client. The fusion of styles and contrasting high gloss door finish to the tall and wall units made this design one of my favourite, despite the initial complications!

Q: Explain the reasons behind the choices of cabinetry and work surfaces …
I worked closely with the client in the early stages and could see her vision. Getting samples produced and offering my recommendations as a designer meant we were both happy with the process and direction the design was taking. The worktops were a white quartz stone with subtle silver sparkles, which complemented the white high gloss units and stainless steel breakfast bar and cooker. Due to the size and brightness of the room, we were able to be a bit more adventurous with the design and finishes. The end result proves that the design didn’t need to be neutral and muted in colour to create that “wow factor”.

Q: What design elements do you think make the scheme so successful?
The design is stunning and really creates a visual impact as the use of Raspberry glass splashbacks just hits you once you enter the space. This was another design decision – made to compliment the client’s favourite pieces of artwork by a local artist which she knew would be displayed in the kitchen area. The statement extractor also adds to the truly bespoke nature of the kitchen as it includes a shelving and display section which looks great above the range cooker.

Q: What is your best advice for someone who may be planning a new kitchen?
I think we all know what we like and what we don’t like! So, if you are planning a new kitchen just go with your instincts and don’t be afraid to introduce colour or finishes which you are drawn to. There are lots of ways to keep a kitchen looking current and classic … and if you are lucky enough to find and employ a designer who can cleverly marry all the aspects required for a kitchen as well as incorporating your own style and personality then you are on to a winner. As a designer, it is important that your client trusts your judgement. Listen to their wishes – fulfilling their vision of the new kitchen is what helps to close the deal and is the way remain friends after the installation is complete.

We love: The entire colour scheme, enhanced by the beautiful light and space available. We’re particularly keen on the Kaelo recessed champagne cooler (officially called ‘the iceless ice bucket!). Sheer genius.
