Jo Heavey, Design Manager at Cococucine was handed the task of creating a modern, sleek monochrome kitchen in an exceptionally spacious six-bedroom home.

Q: What were the stand-out priorities that you considered to be most important for this new kitchen?

The client approached us with a brief to design and install a stylish, functional and ergonomic kitchen for this open plan 690 square foot space. His priority requirements were that the space should incorporate high quality handle-less cabinetry and top brand appliances. He particularly requested that the layout should incorporate a large island with an informal breakfast area.

Q: What did you want to achieve with this design and layout?

This is an individually-designed detached house standing in its own grounds in the leafy village of Gerrard’s Cross. The kitchen was specifically designed for the owner at the time, he was undertaking a complete refurbishment of the whole property. So, our priority was to produce a layout that was in keeping with the proportions of light and space we had to work with. And of course, to produce a spectacular kitchen that would enhance the value and appearance of the home, as well as providing a beautiful and practical living-entertaining space.

Q: Explain the reasons behind the choices of colour, cabinetry and work surfaces …

The client asked for a minimalist design with clean, spare lines, suited to an open plan living space. He liked the idea of a contrast between the tall cabinets and the island. The back wall is in Anthracite matt lacquer to complement the grey finish of the windows. The island cabinets are also a spectacular contrast, especially finished to match the Corian Glacier white worktops.

Q: Can you sum up Cococucine’s role in this particular project?

Cococucine specialises in the design and installation of the highest quality Italian kitchens. We are often asked to create kitchen designs for newly built luxury homes, or for newly created kitchen spaces, such as this one. In this case, we were fully involved in all aspects of the kitchen design, specification, supply and installation.

Q: What design elements do you think make the scheme so successful?

As with any large kitchen, the interior planning is key to ensure every area of the space is utilised effectively and efficiently. We made sure that every cabinet has a specific purpose, appropriate internal fittings and that doors and drawers opened smoothly and easily. Colour and finishes are also of paramount importance to ensure they co-ordinate with the rest of the open plan concept and that the kitchen flows through to the rest of the home with a harmonious effect.

Q: What is your best advice for someone who may be planning a new kitchen?

Research the styles you prefer and visit a few showrooms to check out what the different companies can offer. It’s important to find a designer you feel comfortable with, one who will listen and understand your brief and who will be prepared to challenge your ideas, and to design accordingly within your budget to ensure you get the best possible result. Take in some pictures of kitchens you really like, or simply make a list of your top likes and dislikes!
